The scariest part about migration of your current Joomla version to a newest one is correctly moving all of the data you have. If not done correctly, there are many ways this can go wrong.
Going from Joomla! 1.5 to 3.x is considered a migration or a major migration.Means that considerable changes in how Joomla works, tables, technology have occurred that require a migration instead of an upgrade or update. Both Joomla core extensions and all third-party extensions will need to migrate to Joomla 3.x, including the template. Every single thing needs to be looked at, planned, decided upon, and executed, and each third-party extension needs to be researched to determine if it’s ready for Joomla 3.x and has a migration path or not. There are many changes in features and database tables between these two version, and be sure that it is NOT a one-click update.
The size of your database, or, in another words, the number of pieces that need to be merged will determine how long the process takes.
Standard process starts with an initial call where we review the following:
- Size of your database (number of records to move)
- Stored data current location
- Options for migration data securely to new Joomla
- Third-parties (custom components, modules, plugins..)
- Changes that need to be done in new template
- Some specific details, if they exists
Once we have the information above, we will create a timeline for migration of your website. This timeline can be days, weeks or months, all dependent on specific features that every site have. It is important to note that sometimes it takes 6 – 8 weeks to complete migration to new Joomla.
The best thing about migration is that it is a perfect moment to reassess goals, create a new look and feel (template), clean up, and develop other areas/elements of your site.
